Hardness of metal materials

Hardness is one of the important indicators for measuring the mechanical properties of metal materials, which measures their ability to resist external forces such as indentation or scratching. Hardness testing is the fastest, most economical, and simplest test method for evaluating the mechanical properties of metals. Hardness testing can reflect the differences in performance of metal materials under different chemical compositions, organizational structures, and heat treatment process conditions. Therefore, it is widely used in the inspection of metal properties, supervision of heat treatment process quality, and the development of new materials.

Brinell hardness

It presses a quenched steel ball or hard alloy ball with a diameter of D into the surface of the tested metal material with a certain size of load P, maintains it for a period of time, and then removes the load. The ratio of the load P to the indentation surface area F is the Brinell hardness value, denoted as HB. The Brinell hardness value is generally expressed in kilogram force/mm ² (N/mm ²), but in practical applications, it is also commonly represented by HBW or HBS.
