Plastic flat top chains, also referred to as modular table top conveyor chains, are one core component of modern modular conveyor systems. They are constructed from interlocking plastic modules connected by stainless steel or plastic hinge pins. The modular design enables flexible layout of conveying routes, including straight runs, horizontal bends, vertical inclines/declines and spiral conveying. This type of conveyor chain has gradually replaced traditional metal slat chains in many light and medium-duty automated handling lines, thanks to its lightweight, hygienic and low-noise performance. It is engineered to transport unit loads such as bottles, cans, cartons, packaged goods and small workpieces continuously and stably.
POM (Polyoxymethylene / Acetal): The most widely adopted grade for general conveying. It delivers low coefficient of friction, outstanding abrasion resistance, high stiffness and excellent dimensional stability under varying ambient temperature. POM flat top chains resist fatigue and creep, making them perfect for high-speed bottle, can and container conveying in beverage and packaging plants. Not suitable for strong acidic environments.
PP (Polypropylene): Superior chemical resistance to weak acids, weak alkalis and common sanitizing detergents. It withstands frequent hot water washing and CIP (Clean-in-Place) procedures. Commonly used in dairy, meat processing and food packaging lines with strict hygiene requirements. Its low temperature impact performance is weaker than POM.
HDPE (High Density Polyethylene): Excellent low-temperature toughness and impact resistance. It stays flexible in cold workshops, cold storage and frozen food production lines. Good anti-adhesion property, less material sticking on the chain surface. Wear resistance is lower than POM.
PA (Polyamide / Nylon): High tensile strength, good fatigue resistance and self-lubricating property. Nylon flat top chains are selected for medium-heavy load conditions. It absorbs moisture, which will slightly change dimension, so pre-conditioning is needed for precision applications.
PVC: Good corrosion resistance but limited temperature range. Mostly used in low-cost, low-speed non-food conveying. Not recommended for high hygiene or high friction working conditions.
Hinge pins optional: 304 stainless steel, 316L stainless steel for corrosive and hygienic environments, or plastic pins for ultra-light, non-metallic detection requirements.
Light weight. Much lighter than metal slat chains, which reduces dead load on conveyor frames, drive motors and bearings. It lowers power consumption and mechanical stress on the whole conveyor structure.
Low operation noise. No metal-to-metal clashing during running, greatly improving working environment in indoor workshops.
Good corrosion resistance. Resists weak acid, weak alkali, oils and common cleaning chemicals. No rust issue compared to steel chains.
Hygienic & easy cleaning. Smooth closed surface, few dead corners for residue accumulation. Easy to flush with water, compliant with food-grade standards if using approved raw materials.
Modular assembly. Individual damaged modules can be replaced separately, without removing the entire chain. Maintenance time and spare part cost are reduced significantly.
Flexible layout compatibility. Compatible with straight, radius curve, inclined, declined and spiral conveyors. Various surface and edge designs meet different product handling needs.
Gentle product handling. Flat, uniform surface avoids scratching or denting packaged containers, glass bottles and cosmetic packaging.
Standard pitches: 12.7 mm, 19.05 mm, 25.4 mm, 38.1 mm, 50.8 mm, 76.2 mm. Custom special pitches available upon request.
Working temperature range: POM: -20℃ ~ +90℃ PP: 0℃ ~ +104℃ HDPE: -40℃ ~ +80℃ PA: -30℃ ~ +120℃
Chain width: customizable from narrow 82.5mm up to wide 600mm or wider, assembled by combining multiple modules side by side.
Surface types: Smooth flat top: standard for stable container transfer Non-slip textured top / raised rib top: for inclined conveying to prevent product sliding Perforated / drain hole top: for liquid drainage during washing process Anti-static top: ESD grade for electronic component handling
Side edge styles: straight edge, roller edge, curved radius edge, guard tab edge for turning conveyors.
Load classification: light duty, medium duty, reinforced heavy duty (with reinforced ribs inside modules).
Color options: natural white, blue food grade, black anti-static, grey, green etc. Color can help distinguish production lines or material grades.
Beverage industry: PET water bottles, juice bottles, glass wine bottles, aluminum cans, metal tin cans
Food processing: canned food, packaged snacks, dairy cartons, baked goods, pre-packaged meat
Pharmaceutical & healthcare: medicine bottles, plastic vials, pill boxes, medical disposable packaging
Cosmetic & personal care: lotion bottles, shampoo containers, perfume glass bottles, cosmetic boxes
Packaging industry: corrugated cartons, plastic crates, shrink-wrapped packs
Logistics & distribution: small parcels, plastic totes, sorting transfer lines
Electronic manufacturing: small plastic housings, circuit board carriers (ESD chain version)
Automotive auxiliary lines: small plastic auto parts, fastener packaging boxes
Conveyor frame, wear strips and chain path must be kept clean. Hard particles like metal chips, sand and broken glass will scratch chain surfaces and accelerate pin and module wear.
Adjust chain tension properly. Over-tight tension increases friction load, power draw and wear on pins and sprockets. Too loose tension causes chain jumping, vibration or product shifting.
Avoid strong oxidizing agents, concentrated acid and strong alkali disinfectants. These chemicals will degrade plastic materials, causing cracking, brittleness and strength loss.
Carry out periodic inspection: check hinge pins for wear, check chain modules for cracks, inspect wear strips and drive sprockets. Replace worn components before failure occurs.
Prevent long-term continuous UV exposure. Sunlight and strong ultraviolet light break polymer molecular chains, leading to aging, discoloration and reduced impact resistance. Install shielding if placed outdoors.
Avoid sharp edges directly pressing on chain surface. Sharp corners of totes or products may cut the plastic top.
For inclined conveying, match correct non-slip surface chains and control incline angle, to stop goods slipping backward.
Do not overload beyond chain’s rated working load. Overload will result in permanent deformation of modules or pin breakage.
Drive sprockets: POM sprocket, PP sprocket, nylon sprocket, stainless steel sprocket. Sprocket tooth profile must match chain pitch. Wear strips / slide rails: UHMWPE, HDPE guide rails, low friction material to support chain sliding. Accessories: side guides, guard rails, end transfer plates, nose bars, drive units, tension take-up assemblies, support brackets.
Module cracking: overload, impact shock, chemical attack, UV aging, improper installation.
Pin wear / pin pull out: insufficient lubrication, abrasive dirt, misaligned conveyor track, excessive tension.
Chain skipping teeth: worn sprocket teeth, loose chain tension, foreign objects jammed between chain and sprocket.
Excessive chain elongation: long time running under heavy load, hinge pin abrasion.
Surface scratches: hard contaminants between chain and wear strip.
Confirm working temperature, cleaning method and chemical environment first to select correct plastic material grade.
Calculate actual working load, product weight and conveyor speed to decide light/medium/heavy duty type.
Check conveying layout: straight, curve or incline, to choose matching edge type and surface pattern.
Confirm hygiene requirement: food contact application needs food-grade raw material certification.
For electronic workshop, select anti-static ESD plastic flat top chain.
Confirm available space for chain width and pitch before final selection.
